Cooper’s life, legacyto be celebrated
COLUMBIA, Mo. — The family of Clay C. Cooper is inviting friends to join in celebrating his life and legacy from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the D.W. Reynolds Alumni Center at the University of Missouri.
Cooper, who was best known as an athletic coach and administrator at the University of Missouri, died at 89 on May 31.
His career included two years as head football coach at Joplin High School. Joplin finished 4-5 in 1942 and 8-0-1 in 1943 under Cooper.
Cooper played or coached sports at MU in parts of six decades. He earned nine letters in basketball, football and track, and after serving as a PT boat commander in World War II, began coaching under Don Faurot.
He also served as an assistant coach in football for Frank Broyles, Dan Devine and Al Onofrio and was football recruiting coordinator for 10 years for Onofrio and Warren Powers.
Survivors include his wife, Frances, eight children and 13 grandchildren.
Donations to the Clay Cooper Memorial Scholarship Fund can be sent to the University of Missouri Department of Athletics, Mizzou Arena, 1 Championship Drive, Suite 200, Columbia 65211-3080.
Lion Pride eventplanned at restaurant
The Missouri Southern Lion Pride Luncheon will be held at noon today at Granny Shaffer’s Restaurant, 2728 N. Range Line.
Lion football coach Bart Tatum, women’s volleyball coach Chris Willis and women’s cross country coach Patty Vavra will address the group.
The meeting is open to the public. There will be a cost of $7 per plate.
Tatum will address the meeting about the Lions’ 2-0 start and their MIAA opener on Saturday against Pittsburg State. The game kicks off at 6 p.m. at Fred G. Hughes Stadium.
Southern’s volleyball team, 9-5, entertains Pittsburg State at 7 p.m. today.
The cross country teams will stage the Missouri Southern Stampede on Saturday, with the first race at 9 a.m.
