No. 14 doesn’t come easy

This one wasn’t a blowout.

Pittsburg State recovered a pooched kickoff with a minute remaining and ran out the clock to beat Missouri Southern 31-28 in the Miner’s Bowl on Saturday night.

It was the 14th straight victory for the Gorillas in the series. But No. 6-ranked Pittsburg State didn’t win without a struggle before 9,528 fans at Southern’s Fred G. Hughes Stadium.

The Gorillas appeared in control at 31-14 when junior Caleb Farabi broke a 40-yard touchdown run with 6:44 remaining.

But Southern stormed right back, marching 63 yards on 10 plays. Senior Alley Broussard scored his third touchdown on a 2-yard burst wit 4:41 remaining to make it 31-21.

The Gorillas recovered an onside kick, but were stopped on downs at the Southern 25-yard line with 2:36 remaining. This time, the Lions went 75 yards in nine plays, with Broussard again scoring on a 2-yard run.

That set up another obvious onside-kick attempt.

“The first time we tried an onside kick, they were way overplaying the wide side of the field,” Southern coach Bart Tatum said. “They only had three guys over there and all three of them were way up. We were trying to pooch it in front of the back guy. We just didn’t execute it.”

Junior kicker Brian Malette took the blame.

“I probably put a little too much on it,” said Malette, who admitted his adrenaline was pumping at the situation. “I would have like to have done a little better with it.”

With the Lions out of timeouts, all Pittsburg State had to do was take a couple of knees to run out the clock.

It was a far different conclusion than in recent years. The Gorillas had won the past five games by an average margin of more than 38 points.

Pittsburg State coach Chuck Broyles thought the momentum swung decisively at the start of the second half. The Gorillas drove for a touchdown — and a 17-7 lead — on the opening possession.
