Lions battle to 0-0 tie

PORTALES, N.M. — Although outshot 13-7, Missouri Southern battled Eastern New Mexico to a scoreless tie in a Southwest Soccer Conference match that was halted in the 80th minute due to darkness.
Missouri Southern, 0-6-1, 0-1-1, and Eastern, 1-1-2, 0-0-1, were unable to mount serious offensive threats. The Greyhounds had a 3-2 edge in shots on goal, but Southern goal keeper Jon Hansen recorded three saves.
Austin Whiles led the visiting Lions with three shots wile Emerson Rodrigues paced Eastern with six shot attempts. Eastern New Mexico goalie Peter Horak stopped two shots. Nate Evans, Stuart Ziegler, Jesse Clevenger and Ben Pantzlaff also had shots for the Lions. Whiles and Pantzlaff had shots on goal.
The Lions will continue conference action Sunday when they travel to Canyon, Texas, to play West Texas A&M at 1 p.m.
Lions bow to Jennies
Visiting Central Missouri, 12-3 overall, posted its third straight MIAA volleyball victory Friday night, defeating Missouri Southern in four sets in Young Gymnasium.
The Jennies won the first two sets, 25-14 and 25-19, before the Lions rallied for a 25-22 decision in the third set. CMSU then wraped up the victory, 25-13.
Missouri Southern had a .343 hitting percentage in the third set and took the lead for good at 10-9 off a kill by Ashley Hill.
A 22-11 run by the Jennies won the fourth set after the Lions had tied the score at 2-all.
Ashlee Russell led the Lions with 13 kills and a .333 attack average. Sara Joles had 22 assists and Kari Hammerbacher led with 11 digs.
Paula Harris had 20 kills for the Jennies, Caitlin Pankratz added 54 assists and Rachel Fister had 21 digs.
The Lions, 4-7, 0-2 MIAA, return to action on Sept. 23 in a conference match at Northwest Missouri State.
