jfryar@joplinglobe.com Strong showings in the Southern Stampede have Missouri Southern off to a running start in the national cross country polls. The Lions are No. 9 in the NCAA Division II women’s poll and No. 14 in the men’s poll. That’s a jump of 15 places for the women from the preseason poll. The men moved up four places. Southern’s women are ranked No. 1 in the South Central Region, moving ahead of Abilene Christian. The men are No. 2 in the region, trailing only ACU, which is No. 1 in the overall rankings. The poll is good news, but it’s only a poll, Southern women’s coach Patty Vavra stressed. “We know that Pittsburg State (the preseason MIAA favorite) wasn’t at full strength for the Stampede,” she said. The Gorillas are No. 12 in the women’s national rankings and a third MIAA member, Southwest Baptist, is ranked No. 16. Both Missouri Southern teams have a little extra incentive this season. The Lions will be the host team for both regional competition (Nov. 3) and the national championships (Nov. 17). The Missouri Southern women resume competition Saturday at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago. The men will compete in the Oklahoma State Jamboree in Stillwater. Both teams are gearing up for the MIAA Championships on Oct. 20 in Kirksville, Mo. Player of the week Sophomore linebacker Jared Brawner has been named the MIAA defensive player of the week for his efforts in a 17-16 Southern victory over Southwest Baptist on Saturday. Brawner had eight tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception. His tackles included 1.5 for loss. Southwest Baptist led 16-3 before the interception, which Brawner returned 46 yards.
