Clay, former coach at Southern, guides golf team for NEO “Dave Pawlus (Joplin captain) told me on the 18th tee that if I won, Joplin would win the Horton Smith Cup,” he said. “I had played poorly early in the match and fell to two-down. I finally got untracked and got even at the 16th. I won the hole with a six-foot putt for par. Their player, I don’t remember his name, three-putted from the front of the green.”
Clay is busy running the pro shop at Miami Country Club, working with his NEO players and actively seeking golfers for next season. NEO used to get a lot of players from Southwest Missouri and Southeast Kansas as well as Northeast Oklahoma. He hopes that will happen again. New scramble Stone’s Throw Theatre is holding a two-person scramble on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Carthage Municipal Golf Course. Entry fee is $50 and the field is limited to the first 24 teams. A shotgun start is planned at 9 a.m. Flights and prizes will be determined by the number of entries. Other events include a closest to the pin contest and hole-in-one prizes. Players may contact the Carthage Golf Course, (417) 237-7036 for information or to enter a team. Memorial tournament St. John’s SportsCare’s third annual Lori Pflug Memorial Scholarship Golf tournament is scheduled Friday, Oct. 17, at Briarbrook Country Club. The four-person scramble will start with lunch at 11:30 a.m. Entry fee is $260 for a team or $65 for a single player. According to officials, 100 percent of the proceeds from the tournament will translate into scholarships for MSSU students. Lori died Feb. 18, 2006, of cancer. She was a graduate of Parkwood High School and Missouri Southern State University. She received her Athletic Training Certificate and was a member of the U.S. Olympic Sports Medicine Society. She worked with the LPGA, Kansas State University and the Missouri State High School Activities Association. She was hired by St. John’s SportsCare in 2005.
