Gorillas mangle Fort Hays defense

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Fort Hays State's defense was supposed to be fast, strong and tough against the run.

It ended up being more like a late-afternoon lunch.

No. 19 Pittsburg State ran for 353 yards and dominated Fort Hays from start to finish in a 35-0 victory Saturday in front of 9,033 at Carnie Smith Stadium.

The Tigers (3-6, 1-6 MIAA) came into the game allowing less than 100 yards a game against the run, second in the MIAA.

“This has happened for years,” PSU coach Chuck Broyles said. “Their stats are just unbelievable, but well, they hadn’t played the Gorillas yet as far as running the football.”

The Gorillas (7-2, 5-2) looked faster from the get-go, stuffing Fort Hays into a three-and-out on the opening possession and gashing the Tigers defense for gains of 13, 12 and 18 yards, the latter for a Caleb Farabi touchdown, to take an early 7-0 lead.

“After the first drive, I knew Fort Hays didn’t really have a chance,” fullback Brandon Clark said. “Everybody was ready to play.”

Quarterback Mark Smith added a 41-yard touchdown run on an option keeper to the right early in the second quarter to double the lead.

Farabi finished with 151 yards and a touchdown rushing plus 33 receiving yards, and Smith had 142 rushing yards and two scores, and he was 6-of-10 passing for 82 yards and another TD.

The success was both old — it was the third straight game both Farabi and Smith eclipsed the 100-yard mark — and new — the Gorillas added a wrinkle to their offense by inserting backup tailback Clark at fullback.

“He had a couple of nice, tough runs up the middle,” Broyles said, “... and he had two good blocks up the middle. That’s got to be a plus for us.”

Early in the third quarter, with PSU still up 14-0, Smith faked a handoff to Clark, who then made a key block that sprung Smith for a 54-yard touchdown run up the middle.

“I’m supposed to read the linebacker,” Smith said. “He blitzed, they kind of lost me in the middle, and there was a big hole in the middle.”
