Carthage decks Nevada, captures playoff berth

The Carthage High School football team reached the MSHSAA Class 4 playoffs in convincing fashion.

The Tigers, ahead 21-0 after the first quarter, built a 35-0 halftime lead in cruising 42-6 at Nevada on Thursday night at muddy Logan Field.

Carthage (8-2, 2-1), the runner-up in District 12, will visit District 11 champion Neosho at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Bob Anderson Stadium.

Visiting Carthage defeated the Wildcats 27-25 on Sept. 25 in a nonconference test.

Nevada, which lost its fifth game in a row, finished 3-7 overall and 0-3 in District 4-12.

“Our defense and Brian Poston, who had another strong rushing game, were keys to victory,” Carthage coach Jon Guidie said Friday. “Defensively, Michael York (sophomore middle linebacker) and Cody Caster (senior end) were outstanding.”

Poston, a junior, amassed 228 yards on 18 carries and had scoring runs of 32, 5 and 37 yards.

The Carthage defense, according to its statistics, limited Nevada to a total of 164 yards. Carthage netted 364.

York finished with 14 tackles and outside linebacker Estevan Maturino, a junior, added 13. Senior nose guard Bishop Saba recovered a fumble.

Junior quarterback Derek Peterson threw for 116 yards on 3-for-4 accuracy. Senior tight end Nathan Siebert had scoring receptions covering 68 and 38 yards and had the three catches for the total yardage.

Trevor Hole, a senior, had the Tigers’ other touchdown — on a 5-yard run — and kicked two extra points. Siebert also caught a conversion pass from Peterson, and junior Terrin Garber snagged one from sophomore Sam Carlton.

Poston hiked his season totals to 1,403 rushing yards and 92 points.

The Nevada touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 46-yard run by Austin Baldwin.
