MSSU coaches honored
for cross country wins
Missouri Southern’s Patty Vavra and Tom Rutledge have been named MIAA Cross Country Coaches of the Year.
The Lions swept the conference titles on Oct. 24 in Emporia, Kan.
For Vavra, it was her ninth MIAA coach of the year award and her fifth in cross country, including the last four in a row. The Southern women set a conference record low score (18 points) with their top runners finishing 1-2-4-5-6-7 in the race.
Rutledge won his seventh MIAA coaching honor, his fifth in cross country. The Lions won their eighth conference cross country title in 10 years by placing three runners in the top 10 and four in the top 15.
Both Southern teams return to action on Nov. 7, with the South Central Regional scheduled for Abilene (Texas) Christian. The Southern women are ranked No. 3 nationally. The men are ranked No. 12 in the nation and No. 1 in the region.
Midwest Modified
meeting set Tuesday
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A rules meeting for a new class of area modified stock car racing — Midwest Modified — will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Springfield Raceway.
The class is devised for the modified driver that wants to compete on a weekly basis. The race cars are similar to the B modified and sport mod classes but less expensive. They are scheduled to run at Springfield Raceway and Lebanon Midway Speedway.
Jerry Hoffman (Springfield Raceway) and Jack Jones (Midway Speedway) are holding the meeting and will be available to answer questions.
Southern senior White
earns academic honor
Missouri Southern senior soccer player Jentri White has been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District squad with a 4.0 grade-point average.
White, an art major, is a two-time member of the MIAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll and a two-time MIAA Presidential Scholar honoree.
White, who has started all 17 matches this season, leads the Lions with three assists.
Hunter safety course
scheduled in Miami
MIAMI, Okla. — An Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Hunter Education course will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Student Union ballroom. The class begins at 8 a.m. and continues until approximately 7 p.m.
Topics will include the handling of firearms, safety, game laws, survival, muzzle loading, bow hunting, wildlife management and hunter responsibility. Persons under the age of 36 who want to hunt or purchase a hunting license are expected to first complete a hunter safety course.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. the day of the class.
Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
