sports@joplinglobe.com ST. PETERS, Mo. — Three Webb City swimmers earned honorable mention all-state Saturday in the MSHSAA Boys State Championships at the St. Peters Rec-Plex. Senior Jon Sanders earned the honor in the 100-yard breaststroke, Matt Roughton, a junior, in the 100-yard freestyle and sophomore Eli Swaim in diving. “I was pretty thrilled and very proud of these athletes,” said Shawn Klosterman, Webb City coach. Klosterman, in his 10th year at the Cardinals’ helm, guided his squad to a fourth-place finish recently at the Southwest Missouri Championships in which four new team records were established. The Cardinals, who were represented by six swimmers and two alternates at state, finished 36th in a 46-team field. Roughton, seeded seventh in the 100-yard freestyle, finished 14th with a time of 48.99. This marked the first time since 2003 that anyone from Webb City has been seeded in a state meet. Sanders placed 16th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.25.
