CJ board to discuss turf plan

By Joe Hadsall

Carl Junction varsity football coach Bret Gosch thinks a synthetic turf at Bulldog Stadium will benefit the whole school district — even kindergartners.

“We have kids playing in the street for recess,” Gosch said. “With our schools being as enclosed as they are, we have a limited amount of space.”

That street is Broadway Avenue, and it is closed while school is in session. Carl Junction’s elementary, intermediate and junior high school buildings are all on the same campus, on both sides of the road.

The Carl Junction R-1 Board of Education will meet today to discuss the details of an idea to install synthetic turf. Board members will evaluate different proposals during the meeting, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Intermediate Building.

The general idea is to install turf at Bulldog Stadium and hold almost all of the district’s athletic activities on the new field. Those sports include football, soccer and track and field for both high school and junior high teams.

That would free up a football field used by the junior high team for other uses, including a new playground for the district’s approximate 1,600 students. A set of bleachers on the field’s west side would remain.

“We have one fairly small playground for all those students,” Board President Rob Herron said. “No other school has that small amount. But as we’ve needed to build new buildings, they have taken up old playground space.”

Assistant Superintendent David Stephens said the goal is to have a synthetic turf ready for the 2008 football season. It would be the biggest renovation to the stadium since it was rebuilt in 2003, after being destroyed by a tornado.

“We have received proposals, but we have not solicited official bids yet,” Stephens said. “The purpose is to have an open public meeting about the turf and playground proposal.”

Gosch said his players are excited about the possibility of getting the turf. Webb City and Joplin installed turf surfaces on their football fields this year.

The field will pay for itself after maintenance costs are eliminated.

“With grass you have that yearly investment of maintenance, fertilizer and striping,” Gosch said. “There’s also the wear and tear on the field and on our uniforms. That will be gone.”

And because the grass won’t be destroyed after a single use, the field can be used by many groups, including the marching band and youth football organizations.
