CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Monett crowned five individual champions en route to the team title Saturday in the annual Carl Junction Bulldog Classic wrestling tournament.
The Cubs accumulated 268.5 points, and Pittsburg edged Seneca 202.5-199 for second-place honors. Carthage took fourth with 148.5, followed by Webb City 125, Labette County 70.5, Carl Junction 67.5 and Neosho 43.
The Cubs’ winners came in the middle and upper weights — Ethan Davis at 135 pounds, Kellen Bounous at 145, Kyle Meyer at 152, Jansen Boucher at 171 and Clint Cloud at 215.
Meyer beat Jordan Brown of Pittsburg in the 152-pound final. Meyer won the 145-pound state title in Class 2 last season, and Brown was state runner-up at 160 in Kansas Class 5A.
In a rematch of last season’s Class 2 119-pound state championship, Davis defeated Nathan Fortner of Seneca to determine the top spot at 135. Bounous is another defending state champion at 140.
Pittsburg prevailed in the three lightest weights — Aaron Seybold at 103, Aaron Haake at 112 and Mario Corado at 119. Corado, fourth in state at 112, beat Webb City state medalist Patrick Grigsby in the final.
Seneca’s Colbey Skaggs won the 125-pound weight class, the same weight where he won the state title last season. The Indians’ Josh Mullin earned top honors at 140.
Webb City had two winners in the upper weights — Justin Jacks at 189 and Dacota Cortez at heavyweight.
Other champions were Carthage’s Clint Spencer at 130 and Labette County’s John Hambleton at 160. Spencer was second in state last season.
Trent Landes placed second at 140 pounds for Carl Junction’s highest finish.
Other seconds went to Seneca’s Blake Byrne (103), Timothy Harner (112) and Dalton Cummings (160), Carthage’s Josh Mason (130), Garrett Buzzard (171) and Erick Vargas (heavyweight), Monett’s Juan Renteria (130) and Logan LaLonde (189) and Pittsburg’s Daniel Blair (145) and Austin Winner (215).
