sports@joplinglobe.com PITTSBURG, Kan. — Tim Beck, Pittsburg State’s offensive coordinator for the last 15 years, has been named FootballScoop.com NCAA Division II Coordinator of the Year, it was announced Thursday. This is the first year FootballScoop.com has sponsored the award, one of 14 college football position coaches awards that will be presented. Beck, selected as the winner by a panel of former coaches and players, will receive the award at the national coaches convention next month. Other finalists for the D2 coordinator award were Chadron State (Neb.) defensive coordinator Todd Auer, Abilene Christian offensive coordinator Ken Collums and Minnesota-Duluth defensive coordinator John Steger. The Pittsburg State offense posted huge numbers again this season, averaging 35.5 points and 432.7 yards per game. The Gorillas finished 11-2, losing to Northwest Missouri State 35-10 in the regular season and 38-35 in the second round of the playoffs. The Gorillas ranked 10th nationally in rushing offense (234.8), 18th in scoring and 21st in total offense. The Gorillas have ranked No. 1 or No. 2 nationally in scoring offense and total offense in three of the last five seasons. In the last 65 games, PSU has averaged 500.9 yards and 44.6 points per game. Beck, a native of Ness City, Kan., played at defensive back for the Gorillas in 1985-86 after transferring from Dodge City Community College. He was the Gorillas’ defensive coordinator in 1992-93.
