Joplin’s Ky Laffoon team eased to a decisive victory.
Joplin’s Horton Smith team couldn’t hold on to its small Day One lead and had to settle for a tie, and another year without the cup.
The two tournaments wrapped up on Sunday at Briarbrook Golf Course and Twin Hills Golf and Country Club, respectively, with Joplin and Springfield splitting the two cups.
Joplin, which had a 5-3 lead after the doubles rounds on Saturday, pulled away in a hurry on Sunday in the Ky Laffoon matches.
After Springfield opened with a win to make it 5-4, Joplin was victorious on the next eight scorecards that reached the clubhouse — thanks to Bob McKay, Lou Rapalino, Jim Lucas, Chad Walker, Rick Utter, Chas Ziulowski, Homer Wilson and Terry Key — giving them a 13-4 lead with just seven matches remaining.
It was mathematically over at that point, but Joplin continued to roll.
Les Taylor, Doug Harvey and Dan Tourtelot each grabbed wins while Tim Old and Frank Jacobs halved with their opponents for the final 12-4 margin on the day and the 17-7 weekend win.
Joplin held a 6-2 lead heading into Sunday’s Horton Smith matches but couldn’t hold on for the win.
Springfield, in fact, won the first five matches of the day to take an 8-5 lead. Dustin Edge and Stephen May each won to pull Joplin within a point before Springfield strung together four more wins for a 12-7 lead.
Aaron Boland’s 5 and 4 win against Derek Reynolds kept Joplin’s hopes alive, but Luke Heisterberg topped Todd Stout 4 and 2 to snuff out Joplin’s hopes for a win.
Ben Starkey, Mark Bruder and Jeremy Harbaugh did, however, win three straight for Joplin to end the day, but it only forced the 12-12 tie and Springfield retained the cup.
