MIAMI, Okla. —
Despite collecting eight hits, the Joplin Outlaws had difficulty scoring runs, and the Chillicothe Mudcats earned a 6-1 victory Wednesday night at Wendell Redden Stadium to win their second straight game.
Chillicothe starting pitcher Ryan Lavoie (2-) notched the victory, striking out three batters and allowing only one run through six innings.
“Things felt good out there tonight,” said Lavoie. “We’re starting to put it together offensively, playing great defense, and the pitching is there, too.”
Chillicothe struck first in the fourth inning as shortstop Ryan Busch scored on a Tyler Duplantis single.
Chillicothe extended its lead with a huge fifth inning, scoring four runs off five hits, including a single from Nate Arnold that drove in two runners.
“You really can’t go wrong with that type of offensive performance,” added Lavoie.
The Outlaws have now lost five games in a row, dropping to 10-12 overall and 8-12 in the MINK League.
“They’re executing and we’re not, it’s that simple,” said Joplin coach Rob Vessell. “They’re getting key hits when they need to, and we’re leaving our guys on base.”
Joplin scored its lone run in the seventh inning when second baseman Griffen Glaude walked with the bases loaded and no outs. The Outlaws, however, didn’t score again as two strikeouts and a groundout extinguished the threat.
“The last two games we’ve gotten 18 hits and two runs to show for it,” said Vessell.
The Outlaws and Mudcats complete their three-game series tonight at 7.
