Monett wins second American Legion tournament of the summer

Monett Post 91 captured its second tournament championship of the American Legion baseball season last Saturday by beating Carl Junction Post 781.

Monett prevailed 3-2 at Carthage by scoring two runs in the top of the seventh inning to erase a 2-1 deficit.

Jordan Savage doubled in the tying run, Monett coach Michael Calhoun said on Monday, and Garren Cantrell’s two-out hard grounder was misplayed to allow Savage to score the winning run.

The Joplin Miners beat Carthage 9-1 in five innings to place third in the tourney at Carl Lewton Stadium in Carthage Municipal Park.

Monett, which uses players from several area schools, won the Carl Junction Tournament early in the campaign.

“We played very well in winning the Carl Junction Tournament,” Calhoun said. “We played well enough to win at Carthage.

“We believe this is a first (two tournament titles) for our program,” Calhoun said. “It is for sure for the six or seven years I’ve been around as the (head) coach.”

Calhoun said Sean Goostree hurled two innings in relief to claim the pitching decision against Carl Junction. Fellow right-hander Ben Makela started and worked five innings.

Monett, 13-11 overall, lost 12-4 in its cross-pool game against Pittsburg.

“We had a lot of guys play well during he tournament,” Calhoun, who’s assisted by Ryan Hodges, said. “Goostree shut out McDonald County Tyler Robbins (another right-hander) actually settled down after a rough start and pitched well against Pittsburg.”

Monett entered this week with a 3-3 record in District 15. The postseason tournament will be held at Carthage and Calhoun believes Post 91 is seeking its first title.

Monett was the host of the Triple A District 15 Tournament last season won by the Nevada Red Sox (who have been shifted north to another district).

A Triple A crown would be another first for Monett, Calhoun said.

Calhoun, 35, will be entering his 13th season as the head coach at Monett High School. The 1995 graduate of Aurora High School was a first baseman/outfielder for Bob Smith at College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo.
