MIAMI, Okla. —
Webb City won two games and Joplin and Carl Junction split their outings on Thursday in the annual Miami High School softball tournament.
Joplin lost 17-5 to Webb City before beating Carl Junction 7-6. Webb City beat Wyandotte 10-0 before tackling Joplin. Also, Carl Junction bounced back from its loss to hurdle Miami 12-0.
Games today include Carl Junction (7-7 overall) vs. Broken Arrow B at 11:30 a.m. and Webb City (12-2) vs. Broken Arrow at 1 p.m. Joplin (6-9) plays Miami at noon on Saturday.
Lacy Resa (grand slam) and Desirea Buerge (three-run blow) hit home runs for Webb City against Joplin. Samantha Gilstrap added three hits and Buerge also drove in four tallies.
Joplin’s Tamarah Mascher had three hits and as many RBI.
Joplin, against Carl Junction, received two hits from Kelsey Gould and Krystal Schulze. Kenzie Goswick had two RBI and Gould scored two runs. Carl Junction’s Michaela Horn and Tasha Steele each had two hits.
Carl Junction, against Miami, had 17 hits with Sydni Beck and Bryce Boyd each getting three and Beck and the homering Horn combining for seven RBI to back the two-hit pitching of senior right-hander Sydney Koch. English, Horn and Koch added two hits apiece.
Webb City, against Wyandotte, was paced by Buerge’s 3-for-3 and four RBI. Resa, Morgan Lamming and Mikalea Burgess each had two hits and winning pitcher Kaitlin Beason drove in two runs. Rachel Anderson had two hits for Wyandotte.
Webb City 2, Carthage 1
CARTHAGE, Mo. — The Cardinals, moving from the Miami Tournament, hiked their Central Ozark Conference Large Division record to 5-0 by pushing across a run in the seventh inning.
Singles by Desirea Buerge and Morgan Lammey and a walk to Emily Harris loaded the bases and Lacy Resa’s fielder’s choice grounder was misplayed.
Kaitlin Beason allowed three hits, struck out five and walked one in besting Quincy Charleston.
Getting two hits apiece in the game were Resa and Samantha Gilstrap for Webb City and Megan Taylor for Carthage (8-8, 3-2).
Volleyball
Eagles roll
ROLLA, Mo. — Olivia Hampton served the last five points of Joplin’s 25-14, 25-20 victory against Rolla in an Ozark Conference match.
“Olivia had a great night hitting,” said Joplin head coach Staci Saunders. “Our setting did a nice job. In the first game, we led 10-0. They fought back in the second game and tied the score at 20.”
Hampton had 10 kills and four blocks, and Erin Lawellin had 12 serve points and 19 assists.
Warriors best Cavaliers
McAuley reached .500 for the season by downing Thomas Jefferson 25-14, 25-18 in Ozark 7 Conference play.
Brooke Russell led the Warriors with four kills and four aces. Miranda Green also had four kills and added five digs. Abby Pekarek finished with six assists.
The Warriors (3-3) take on Pleasant Hope at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Thomas Jefferson Invitational.
CHC trips Seneca
SENECA, Mo. — Jade Thompson had nine kills and led College Heights Christian to a 25-22, 25-15 victory.
Athen Taylor had 23 assists for the Cougars. Ashley Martin led Seneca with four kills and Cheyenne Neuhoff had five digs.
Bulldogs top Mustangs
ANDERSON, Mo. — Carl Junction whipped McDonald County 25-7, 25-13 in a nonconference game.
Bradyn Walls had eight service points, 17 assists and nine digs for the Bulldogs. Hope Joyner added eight kills and a block. Mackenzie Irwin had two aces, 12 service points and four kills.
McDonald County’s Preslea Reese recorded five kills, Dani Pierce had 10 assists and Alisha Ballard six digs.
Soccer
Carl Junction 2, Cassville 0
MONETT, Mo. — A pair of second-half goals lifted Carl Junction past Cassville at the Monett Tournament.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the 60th minute when Jacob Pelt found the back of the net off a pass from Tyler Morley.
Morley added his second assist nine minutes later when he fed Landon Bray to cap the scoring.
The Bulldogs (4-0) fired 12 shots on goal while limiting the Wildcats to four.
Bulldogs keeper Josiah Dinwiddie collected four saves. Indy Cole saved 10 shots for the Wildcats.
Tennis
Carl Junction 5, Mount Vernon 4
MOUNT VERNON, Mo. — Cheyenne Pickett and Kaylie Hawkins rallied to win their singles matches and give the Bulldogs a win over the Mountaineers.
Pickett trailed 5-2 in her match with Alyssa Shepard before coming back for a 9-7 win. Hawkins then beat Shealynn Vandergrift 8-5 in come-from-behind fashion to give the Bulldogs the 5-4 win.
Emily Cook and Kenzie Kuykendall also picked up singles wins for Carl Junction while Madison Adrian and Kuykendall teamed up for a doubles win.
Carl Junction, 7-2 in duals, plays in the Monett Tournament today.
