Warriors rolls past Liberal 54-6

Senior quarterback Mitch Wear threw for 172 yards on five touchdown plays as the McAuley Warriors defeated the Liberal Bulldogs 54-6 Friday night at Fred G. Hughes Stadium.

McAuley started fast as Wear threw a 50-yard pass on the second play from scrimmage to junior Colin Hughes and then connected with fellow senior Shaw Robertson on a 19-yard touchdown pass just two plays later.

Liberal answered on its first drive as junior Austin Spivey ran the ball in from four yards out to tie the game at 6-6.

From then on it was all Warriors as McAuley scored in three plays as Wear connected with junior Greg Carney for a 57-yard touchdown. The McAuley defense then stepped up as Carney blocked the Bulldogs’ punt out of the back of the end zone for a safety to finish the scoring in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, senior Chase Damer scooped up a Liberal fumble and returned it 25 yards for a Warrior touchdown. Then Wear connected for this third touchdown throw of the first half, this time to junior Colin Hughes for a 22-yard strike.

“Mitch is improving,” Warriors coach Brenden Gubera said. “We challenged him tonight and he came out and threw the ball well. He is starting to get to know the offense, and he made a few adjustments out there tonight on his own.

Added Gubera: “After (Liberal’s) first drive, our defense woke up. That’s three games in a row that we have allowed a score on their first drive, but our defense played better and we tackled better.”

McAuley scored three more times in the second half as Wear connected with junior Cole Lowry twice for a total of 74 yards on two scores and then Lowry broke a 59-yard run with 1:33 left in the game.

The Warriors have another home game next Friday against Ash Grove.
