Four sophomores return to lead Cottey

Cottey College basketball coach Dave Ketterman expects four sophomores will be in the starting lineup today for the Comets in their 5:30 p.m. debut against the Missouri Valley junior varsity at Marshall.

The veterans are 5-foot-4 Chelsey Rowland, 5-9 Blaklee Sanders, 5-11 Bailey Braden and 5-11 Petra Stankovic.

Ketterman plans to complete the starters with 5-7 freshman Dayna Turnbull of New Zealand.

Carl Junction’s Lanie Skaggs, 5-11, is the Nevada-based Comets’ fifth veteran and is ticketed to support Braden.

Five more freshmen round out the Cottey 11-player roster.

“I like the abilities of those five freshmen so much that we may two-platoon,” Ketterman said.

They are 5-9 Selena Gochenour, 5-10 Cassie Hale, 5-7 Kennadi Howard, 5-5 Caryli Ingles and 5-9 Kat Zumalt.

“A lot (about substituting), of course, just depends on the situation,” Ketterman said.

“We hope to play a faster-paced game compared to last season,” Ketterman said. “We’d like to apply pressure all over the court on offense as well as defense.

“I’m very pleased with this recruiting class,” Ketterman said. “This group is very athletic. It has the ability to play off the dribble and score. We needed to bring in more depth at the guard position and I believe we’ve done that.

“The lack of a real strong, physical inside player is a concern,” Ketterman said. “Bailey (Braden) and Lanie (Skaggs) are more like power forwards. Some of our regional opponents have strong inside players.”

Braden, from Rogersville, Mo., and Sanders, Atchison, Kan., earned NJCAA Division II Region 16 honors last season, Ketterman said. Sanders attended Bentonville (Ark.) High School before transferring to Atchison for her senior season.

Ketterman, whose Comets were 6-17 last season, is in his ninth year as the Cottey coach. His aides are Marla Foreman (administrative assistant) and Lex Blue (volunteer assistant).

The Cottey home opener is at 6 p.m. on Tuesday against Ozark Christian.
