Softball Lions to battle 7th-rated Hornets today

Missouri Southern faces No. 7 Emporia State in an MIAA softball doubleheader at 1 p.m. today at Lea Kungle Field.

The homestand will continue when the Lions face Washburn in a doubleheader at noon Sunday.

The Lions (12-24, 4-8 MIAA) are batting .254 as a team. First baseman Dawn Grass leads the team in batting average (.340), hits (34) and total bases (53). Shortstop Michala Wood is batting .279, is second on the team in hits (29) and is third in runs batted in (14).

Left fielder Chloe Brown leads the Lions in home runs (7), RBI (18) and slugging (.531). Center fielder Jessica Castoe is batting .308 in 11 starts.

The Lions’ top two starting pitchers are Haley Kinnison (6-11, 4.06 ERA) and Sarah Williams (3-8, 6.00 ERA). Shelby Mitchell (1-5, 4.99) has appeared in 20 games and has one save.

MSSU defeated Lindenwood 6-1 and 8-0 in a doubleheader Wednesday.

Emporia State (32-7, 12-0) has won eight straight after a doubleheader sweep Friday at Pittsburg State, 8-2 and 14-9 in nine innings. The Hornets have seven players with batting averages of .320 or better, led by center fielder Stephanie Goodwin (.362).

First baseman and cleanup hitter Tricia Vogel is batting .320 with four home runs and 27 RBI. Shortstop Taylor Zordel (.338) has stolen 25 bases in 28 attempts.

Emporia State’s top pitcher is Kaitlyn Caston (21-5, 2.39 ERA), a junior who has 20 complete games in as many starts. She is batting .344 and is tied with third baseman Jessica Gragg for the team lead with six home runs.

 Eryn Stockman (9-2, 3.56 ERA), a freshman, has started the Hornets’ other 17 games.
