MSSU's Green seventh in hammer at Kansas Relays

The Joplin Globe

LAWRENCE, Kan. —  Neither rain nor sleet nor snow could prevent Missouri Southern’s Dustin Green from a high finish Thursday at the Kansas Relays.

Green took seventh place in the hammer throw at 180 feet, 11 inches. Teammate Evan Moore was 16th at 169-3.

“It was snowing and 38 degrees at the time,” Lions coach Tom Rutledge said Thursday night. “Now it’s 32 degrees. The rain stopped around 5 o’clock, and it started getting colder and started snowing a little bit. We had a little bit of everything.”

The conditions, however, did prompt the Lion coaches to pull Jayce Thomas out of the final three events of the decathlon.

Thomas, in third place after Wednesday’s five events, won the 110-meter hurdles on Thursday (15.27 seconds) to move into first place in the standings. But he fouled on all three throws in the discus, and the coaches decided to end Thomas’ day.

“He tried to throw the discus but it slipped off his hands all three times and fouled,” Rutledge said. “It was raining and sleeting, and the discus was going everywhere. They were not going to move the pole vault inside, so that was going to be dangerous. We pulled him out because it’s not worth risking injury.”

Dan Simon of Wisconsin-Milwaukee won the decathlon with 6,429, followed by Atsu Nyamadi of Neosho County 6,234 and first-day leader John Cord of Simpson (Iowa) 6,151. Six of the 13 entries did not finish.

Three Lions braved the cold temperatures to run the 10,000 meters on Thursday night.

Eric Schott came in ninth place (31:11), and Jake Benton was 13th (31:22).

“We were hoping for anything under 31:00, but conditions were kind of tough,” Rutledge said. “It was good to see them back on the track.”

The Lions’ Cassy Kendrick finished third in her section and 16th overall in the women’s race (38:53.16).

The Lions have entries in two events today — Green, Moore and Seth Hackney in the shot put and Colton Wooldridge in the 3,000 steeplechase.
