Smith back in lineup for Seneca boys

Seneca head coach Will King welcomed the return of Chance Smith to the Indians’ lineup for Friday night’s game at Nevada.

Smith, a 6-foot-3 senior, had been out of action since he sustained an ankle injury against Diamond on Dec. 12 in the first game of the Seneca Tournament.

Smith scored 14 points in Seneca’s 64-60 victory against Nevada. Tyrell Hembree led the Indians with 20 points and Elias Roelfsema had 19 points.

The holiday break gave King the opportunity to incorporate Smith back into the lineup and get some valuable practice time.

“We didn’t have Chance to start the season because of football,” King said. “I was just glad to have some time over the break to clean up some things that we had to put in quickly.”

Seneca is a two-time defending co-champion of the Big 8 Conference along with Carl Junction and Mount Vernon.

The Class 3, District 12 tournament will be at Mount Vernon with Big 8 teams East Newton, Mount Vernon and Seneca in the field along with Ash Grove, Clever, Diamond, Sarcoxie and Southwest.

“The Big 8 Conference is really strong this year,” King said. “Every team is going in with high expectations.”

Seneca will begin its conference schedule with its next game on Friday, Jan. 17, at Carl Junction. The game will serve as Carl Junction’s homecoming.
