Second-half outburst carries Carl Junction past Cardinals

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Carl Junction’s defensive pressure triggered an 11-0 third-quarter run, and the Bulldogs went on to defeat Webb City 64-43 Tuesday night in a boys nonconference game.

Matt Magee led four Carl Junction players in double figures with 20 points, including 8-of-10 free throws.

The Bulldogs never trailed but led just 31-28 two minutes into the second half when Aaron Nelson’s field goal inside assisted by Magee started Carl Junction’s decisive run.

“It took us the first half to knock the rust off,” said Carl Junction head coach Kyle Williams. “It has been three weeks since our last game.”

The Bulldogs made 17-of-27 free throws compared with 3-of-7 for Webb City and didn’t allow the Cardinals to get into bonus situations at the free throw line.

“We go to a halfcourt man (defense) quite a bit,” Williams said. “We have three guys underneath who have 6-foot-6 wingspans. We have protection down there. Nelson was close to a triple double with blocked shots.”

Nelson, a 6-6 junior, and senior guard Dustin Satterlee each scored 13 points. Gaige Crockett, a 6-4 senior, added 12 points, including two 3-pointers in the first half.

Carl Junction (4-3) led 19-10 early in the second quarter, but Webb City closed the gap behind the shooting of Channing Mickey, who scored 10 of his team-high 14 points in the first half. Tayler Arterburn scored all eight of his points in the first half, and the Cardinals went into halftime trailing 29-24.

Webb City’s turnovers became layups for Carl Junction in the second half as the Bulldogs extended their lead to 59-37 on a layup by Magee with 3:15 remaining.

Webb City’s Zach Hallacy scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half, when the Cardinals were outscored 35-19.

“We played good defense without fouling,” Williams said. “We had good rotations all night long. We played with a lot of energy and had a good crowd.

“They (the Cardinals) played a lot of zone and we didn’t settle for 3s. We found a way to get the ball inside.”

Carl Junction will begin its Big 8 Conference schedule against Cassville at 6 p.m. Friday night at Carl Junction. Webb City (3-6) will face Lebanon in a nonconference game at 6 p.m. Friday at Webb City.
