Joplin opens Kaminsky Classic with forfeit win

— Host Joplin advanced to the semifinal round of the Kaminsky Classic when St. Louis Vashon forfeited Thursday night’s first-round game.

Vashon did not have school on Thursday, and for that reason the school administration would not allow the basketball team to make the trip to Joplin.

"We had prepared for Vashon and their zone," Joplin coach Jeff Williams said. "But life goes on. This gave us another day to prepare and work on some things. It allows us to get a good scout and come in rested for the next game."

On Thursday night Vashon notified Joplin athletics director Jeff Starkweather that the team will not be coming at all this weekend because school has been called off again today.

As a result tonight’s and Saturday’s tournament sessions will have three games. Tonight’s games begin at 5 — one hour later than originally scheduled. Joplin plays in the second semifinal game tonight at 8.
