Outlaws split with St. Joseph

Second baseman Zac Barton and designated hitter Koby Chadick each had three hits as the Joplin Outlaws defeated St. Joseph 13-3 in the first game of a MINK League doubleheader Monday night at Joe Becker Stadium.

St. Joseph won the second game 10-6 thanks to Mike Schulze’s seventh-inning grand slam.

In the opener, Outlaws scored five runs in the second inning and four more in the third inning as they took a 9-2 lead behind starting pitcher Matt Hasenbeck.

“What I did all night was spot my fastball,” said Hasenbeck, who allowed 11 hits — including nine singles — in five innings. “It’s anyone’s best pitch, and I felt like I did a pretty good job of it tonight.

“We went to St. Joseph on Friday and got shut out both games,” he said. “Obviously, on the mound, it relaxes you and you have to think less (with a big lead) — just get your team back to the dugout and keep hitting.”

Garrett Kauffman’s two-run double highlighted the five-run second inning that included RBI singles by Barton and catcher Max Ayoub, who was 2-for-4 and drove in three runs. Second baseman Zac Stewart drove in the other run on a fielder’s choice.

In the third inning, first baseman Brad Foss hit a double down the left-field line that drove in Enrique Finol, who led off the inning with a single. Ayoub’s two-out, two-run double scored Foss and Barton, who had singled, and Chadick followed with an RBI single to center.

“It’s good to be back at home and bounce back after a rough one last night,” said Outlaws head coach Rob Vessell, referring to a 7-4 loss at Ozark. “We executed tonight. That was very pleasing to see.”

Finol was 2-for-3 and scored three runs. Foss was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scored twice.

The three-game series resumes with a single nine-inning game at 7 p.m. today at Joe Becker Stadium.

The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead against Hasenbeck in the first inning when left fielder Zac Johnson tripled to left-center field and scored on a throwing error.

St. Joseph added a run in the third inning on an error and Kris Koorpor’s RBI double that fell just short of the 342-feet sign down the left-field line. The Mustangs added a run in the fourth inning on consecutive singles by Payton Scarborough, Kyle Richards and Michael Schulze.

Josh Lansangan pitched two innings of shutout relief for the Outlaws.

Chadick began a four-run sixth inning with a double that short-hopped against the fence in left field. Stewart singled and Dickens walked before Finol walked and forced in a run.

Foss drove in Stewart with a single to left before Kauffman and shortstop Gordon Guild each drove in a run with ground balls.
