JOPLIN, Mo. —
Professional baseball is returning to historic Joe Becker Stadium in Joplin for an exhibition game between the Kansas City T-Bones and the Wichita Wingnuts in May.
Joplin city manager Mark Rohr announced the event at a news confernce on Friday at Joe Becker Stadium.
“Joe Becker Stadium is a great venue for baseball, and we’re eager to have this event in this historic ballpark,” Rohr said. “Professional baseball was a part of Joplin’s history, and it can be part of the future too. We encourage fans of America’s greatest pastime to come out for the day.”
The game will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 12. Tickets will be $5 for adults and $3 for children, ages 3 to 12. Since the game falls on Mother’s Day, all mothers will get in free with a paid admission.
Minor league baseball was played at Joe Becker in Joplin until 1954. Baseball greats Mickey Mantle, Stan Musial, Joe Garagiola, Ken Boyer and Whitey Herzog all played at Joe Becker.
The game will serve as a kickoff to celebrate the 100th anniversity of Joe Becker Stadium, which was built in 1913. Other celebrations for the stadium will be during the Joplin Outlaws opening series on June 1-2, at the Premier Baseball Junior World Series from July 17-21 and at the Missouri American Leagion AA state championship from July 25-28.
