WARRENSBURG, Mo. —
Central Missouri limited Missouri Southern to 10 hits and swept the Lions 8-0 and 4-1 Tuesday in an MIAA softball doubleheader at the South Recreation Complex.
The Lions (15-30, 4-10 MIAA) played the first of four league twinbills this week, the final week of the regular season. Missouri Southern has a makeup doubleheader at 2 p.m. today at Southwest Baptist, then plays at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Washburn and 1 p.m. Sunday at Fort Hays State.
The Jennies’ Sarah Espy (8-7) blanked the Lions on seven hits in the opener, including two singles by Shelby Romines and Brooke Swadley and a double by Brooke Hurley.
Alex Groeger went 3-for-3, scored three runs and drove in three for the Jennies. She doubled to center field to score a run in the second inning and hit a two-run home run to right field in the fourth, her second of the season, in the fourth.
Braylyn Bivens led off the Central Missouri first with her first homer of the season, a shot to center.
Lions starter Haley Pypes (9-8) allowed six hits and six runs (five earned) in three innings, walked five and struck out two. Hannah Cooke finished, allowed two runs and four hits.
Jakki Prater (3-3) gave up three hits and a run, walked one and fanned three in the nightcap. The Lions’ Kayce Moore (3-10) allowed four runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings, struck out two and walked one.
Romines homered to center field, her second of the season, for the Lions’ run in the fourth inning. Missouri Southern’s other hits were a single by Swadley in the second and a double by Brianna Fulkerson in the sixth.
Brittany Martin drove in three of the Jennies’ runs with her fourth and fifth homers this season, a two-run shot to left-center in the second and solo blast to center in the fourth.
