MSSU to host Special Olympics on Friday

Approximately 650 athletes are expected to compete in the annual Special Olympics Southwest Area Spring Games on Friday at Missouri Southern’s Fred G. Hughes Stadium.

Again this year, the MSSU athletics department is the host for the meet, which starts at 8:30 a.m. More than 200 student-athletes at Southern will be on hand to help administer the meet, provide guideance  or record results.

“To be able to engage with these Special Olympians gives our student-athletes a whole new appreciation for what these athletes overcome,” said MSSU women’s basketball coach Maryann Mitts, the school’s coordinator of community service. “It is also humbling to see how truly fortunate we are to be able to compete on a daily basis. We appreciate very much the relationship we have established over the years with the Special Olympics.”

The event is the largest community service project of the year for the Lions’ athletics department. MSSU athletics remains committed to giving back to Joplin and the surrounding communities through an emphasis on community service.

Last year, the athletics department logged 2,846 community service hours from coaches, staff and student-athletes.  To date this year, more 3,400 hours have been documented.
