Carl Junction defeated Mount Vernon 5-1 Wednesday afternoon in the championship match of the Class 1 District 11 girls tennis team district tournament at the Thomas Jefferson courts.
By winning the district, the Bulldogs will be the host for the four-team sectional tournament on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Joplin Athletic Complex courts.
Emily Cook, Rebecca O’Hanahan, Kenzie Kuykendall, Madison Adrian and Cheyenne Pickett won singles matches for the Bulldogs. Mount Vernon’s Shea Vandergriff won at No. 6 singles.
In semifinal matches, Carl Junction blanked Monett 5-0 and Mount Vernon downed Thomas Jefferson 5-2.
Paige McCoy-Emily Fenton won their doubles match to give the Mountaineers the clinching point against Thomas Jefferson. Singles wins went to Fenton, Kara Violett, Alyssa Shepard and Vandergriff.
Thomas Jefferson’s Ophelia Chen and Marieke John won their singles matches.
The Bulldogs’ Cook, O’Hanahan, Kuykendall, Adrian and Pickett won singles matches against Monett.
Class 2 District 12
REPUBLIC, Mo. — Republic upended Joplin 5-2 Wednesday in the championship round of the Class 2 District 12 team tournament.
Joplin (11-3) received victories from Laela Zaidi at No. 2 singles and Paula Lanta-Zaidi at No. 1 doubles.
The Eagles return to Republic today for the singles and doubles district tournament, starting at 9 a.m.
Class 3 District 12
MONETT, Mo. — Third-seeded Carl Junction used two four-run innings to beat East Newton 8-1 Wednesday in the Class 3 District 12 tournament.
Cassville, the fourth seed, ousted Aurora 5-2 in the tournament opener.
Semifinal games today match top-seeded Monett against Cassville at 5 p.m. and No. 2 Seneca vs. Carl Junction at 7. The winners advance to the championship game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Sydni Beck’s two-run triple highlighted the Bulldogs’ four-run first inning, and Arista Pattyson belted a three-run home run during a four-run fifth.
Pattyson also drove in a run in the first, finishing with two hits and four runs batted in. Bryce Boyd and Katlyn Frazier contributed two hits apiece for Carl Junction.
Cassville’s Callie Meek had two hits and two RBI, and Skyler Branham also had two hits. Cierra Hilton hit two singles for Aurora.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Webb City won half of the 12 events in Tuesday’s meet.
The Cardinals’ Jacob Schultz won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and Tucker Palone and Nathan Schultz won the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke, respectively.
Webb City’s Palone, Nathan and Jacob Schultz and Dalton Ferguson teamed up to win both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
Joplin’s Chris Martucci prevailed in the 200 individual medley, and Carthage had first-place efforts from Kelly Wiley in the 50 freestyle, George Schramm in the 100 freestyle and the 200 free relay team of Wiley, Schramm, Ben Derryberry and Will Mansfield.
Joplin coach Blair Dance said the Eagles won four of their six duals.
The Eagles also knocked eight seconds off their best time in the 400 free relay and two seconds off their tim in the 200 medley relay. Both teams placed third overall.
Mount Vernon wins district
MARSHFIELD, Mo. — Mount Vernon placed all five players among the top seven and rolled to the Class 1 District 4 girls golf team championship on Tuesday at Marshfield Country Club.
The Mountaineers, led by medalist Ashley Childers, won with 356, and Rogersville was second with 397.
Childers shot a 73 with nines of 35-38. She finished 11 shots ahead of runner-up Lyndsey Standage of Rogersville.
Other Mount Vernon scores were Megan Pope 93, Hayley Bowles and Lexi Farmer 95 and Hailee Dudley 96.
The top two teams and top 15 individuals not on those two teams advance to next week’s sectional tournament
Individual qualfiers from area teams were Seneca’s Elyssa Esposito (96), Tiana Brownen (108) and Katie Griffin (111) and Nevada’s Hannah Householder (96).
