Central Missouri sweeps PSU

WARRENSBURG, Mo. — Central Missouri senior guard Widgett Washington scored a game-high 22 points as the Mules defeated the Pittsburg State Gorillas 80-73 Saturday at Central Missouri’s Multipurpose Building.

Pitt State (11-3 overall, 4-2 MIAA) led 42-39 at halftime and by as many as five points in the second half. However, Central Missouri (10-3, 4-1) claimed a 51-49 with 16:15 left when Domonique Long hit a 3-pointer.

The Mules extended their lead to 67-58 with 9:29 left when Long hit a pair of free throws.

Pitt State responded with a 9-0 run to tie the game when Terrell Eady made a layup with 6:32 left.]

However, the Gorillas couldn’t regain the lead down the stretch.

Trailing by four with 57 seconds remaining, Pitt State had on opportunity with JaVon McGee at the free-throw line.

But McGee missed both, and the Mules sealed the win by making their free throws in the final minute.

Kaleb Porter led Pitt State with 16 points and four assists.

McGee, Rico Pierrevillus and Courtney Ingram each scored in double figures with 12, 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Lance Beckwith scored 12 and Long contributed 10 points for the Mules.

Central Missouri will travel to face Nebraska Kearney on Wednesday.

Pitt State will end its three-game road trip as the Gorillas travel to face Missouri Southern on Wednesday.

CEN. MISSOURI WOMEN 70, PITT STATE 63

No. 20 Pitt State’s rally from a 12-point deficit fell short against the 15th-ranked Central Missouri Jennies.

Nicole Caddell led Central Missouri (12-1, 4-1) with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Quinnecia Twine and Keuna Flax added 16 and 12 points, respectively.

A three-point play by Lizzy Jeronimus helped the Gorillas cut the Central Missourl lead to one with 8:00 left.

However, Pitt State was never able to capture the lead.

Jeronimus led the Gorillas with 16 points.

Morgan Westhoff and Kylie Gafford came off the bench to score 11 each, while Drew Roberts hit a pair of late 3-pointers to finish with 10.

Pitt State (10-4, 4-2) committed 17 turnovers and Central Missouri was able to convert them into 19 points.
