Diamond starts strong for NEO tourney win

MIAMI, Okla. — Diamond jumped out to a 20-4 first-quarter lead en route to a 70-44 victory over Wyandotte on Saturday in the Boys Blue Division of the 68th annual Northeastern Oklahoma A&M High School Basketball Tournament.

Trent Hayes and Logan Myers tallied 16 and 15 points, respectively, and Brodie Bien chipped in with 10 for the Wildcats (15-4), who led 43-19 at halftime.

Mason Neese captured game honors with 21 points for Wyandotte, and Jason Larson had 11.

Boys Norse

Dakota Ritchie’s basket with 8.5 seconds remaining lifted Foyil past Quapaw 43-42 in the championship game, giving the Panthers their second NEO title in as many years.

Quapaw, ahead 24-19 at halftime but down 31-27 after three quarters, took a 42-41 lead on Tyler Bacon’s free throw with 1:01 left.

Boys Gold

Kyle Woods poured in 32 points as Monett slipped past Southwest 58-57 in the fifth-place game.

Southwest lost despite hitting 11 3-point goals.

The championship game produced an upset as St. Louis Christian knocked off Roland 36-30. Roland, 17-0 entering the game, was held scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Girls Norse

Afton took control in the second half and beat Welch 38-25 in the championship game.

The title was the 13th for the Afton girls in the NEO Tournament but their first since 2009.

Tied 18-18 at halftime, the Eagles (14-6) outscored Welch 8-3 in the third quarter and 12-4 in the final eight minutes.

Daley Wheatley had 15 points and Stella Suits 12 for Afton. Lacey Windle scored 14 for Welch (9-11).

Girls Gold

Hanna Chenoweth’s 17 points paced three players in double figures as Miami rolled past Bluejacket 74-33 in the third-place game.

Michaela Martin added 14 points and Genevieve Reavis 10 for the Wardogs (10-8).

Bluejacket (12-5) held an 11-4 lead before Miami rallied to lead 14-13 after one quarter and then pull away to lead 41-17 at halftime and 64-26 after three quarters.

Samantha williams scored 16 points for the Chieftains.

Girls Blue

Diamond won fifth-place honors with a 50-49 victory over Roland’s junior varsity.

Morrisville captured the division crown by beating Quapaw 52-38.
