BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. —
A little bit of luck never hurts, and luck helped decide a state championship.
David McCoy, after a fortunate deflection, scored in the 75th minute to boost St. Dominic past Carthage 2-1 Saturday afternoon in the Class 2 soccer championship match at Blue Springs South High School.
The Tigers, down 1-0 at halftime, pulled even midway through the second half on a goal by Erik Estrada, assisted by Ismael Serratos.
“Ismael got the ball and beat a kid, and he sent a ball through to Erik Estrada,’’ Carthage coach Jacob Osborne said. “Estrada hit a nice shot and scored.
“I thought we had them in the second half after our goal. We got momentum behind us and I thought we were going to get it but didn’t quite get there. We did have a couple more opportunities but none that were great.”
With thoughts of overtime starting to surface, St. Dominic’s McCoy snapped the tie with just under six minutes remaining.
“The ball went into the box and there were a lot of bodies there,” Osborne said. “One of our kids tried to clear the ball. When he kicked it to clear, it hit somebody. The ball ended up dropping and deflected to one of their players, and he shot from there.
“The kid who hit the shot, it was a very good shot. He still had bodies between him and the goal. He hit a very nice shot.”
The Tigers finish with a 22-9 record, the most successful season in school history.
“I thought it had potential before the season started, but definitely we had a lot of question marks,” Osborne said. “We had nine seniors last year, but with the kids coming to fill those spots and the kids we had returning, I thought the team had good potential. It was the first part of October when it started clicking for us. I thought we’d have a good chance to be real dangerous late in the season.”
