Monett's Ty Goetz steps down as boys basketball coach

Ty Goetz, boys basketball coach at Monett High School, has stepped down after 51⁄2 seasons at the helm.

“A lot of factors played into the decision,” Goetz said on Tuesday. “Family considerations probably were No. 1.

“But you have to grade yourself, too, and I didn’t see the necessary results,” Goetz, a graduate of Purdy High School (1999) and Missouri Southern, said.

The Class 4 Cubs, who returned just one starter in 6-foot-3 senior Kyle Woods, finished 7-19 overall and 0-7 in the Big 8 Conference.

Monett won three of four games to reach 7-13 on Feb. 1. Those wins included 58-57 against Washburn Southwest in the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Tournament and 44-40 at Bolivar. But the Cubs finished the campaign with six losses.

Monett had gone 9-19 overall and 3-4 in the Big 8 in 1011-12.

Goetz said he’ll continue as the head softball coach.

“Hopefully (next spring), I can get back on the boys side assisting Coach (Michael) Calhoun in baseball,” Goetz said.

“I’d like to become more involved with softball activities in the summer,” Goetz said.

“For sure, this move will enable me to spend more time with family,” Goetz said.

Courtney (formerly Martin of Purdy) and Ty have two children — daughter Carsyn, 5, and son Tucker, 2.

Courtney, a cheerleader at Missouri Southern, has stepped down as the Monett cheerleading coach, Ty said.
