Carthage, Mount Vernon, Seneca post tournament wins

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Drew Bridges struck out 15 batters and Carthage used two big innings to beat Monett 12-0 Wednesday night in the 39th annual Bill O’Dell Tournament at Carl Lewton Stadium.

Earlier games between Big 8 Conference foes saw Seneca defeat Carl Junction 8-3 and Mount Vernon blank Lamar 7-0.

Today’s tsession pits Lamar vs. Monett at 2 p.m., Nevada vs. Seneca at 4:30 and Webb City vs. Carl Junction at 7.

Bridges also walked three batters in six innings, and Zach Overton worked the final inning.

Carthage took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, and the Tigers tallied their final eight runs in the seventh.

Bridges, Jonny Mills and Jordan Musser stroked two hits apiece to lead Carthage’s 11-hit attack. Mills’ double scored two runs in the seventh inning.

Nicky Roberts and Zack Hammond had two hits apiece for Monett.

Seneca and Carl Junction were tied 1-1 until the Indians tallied five runs in the fifth inning.

A walk to Brayden Larson and singles by Dalan Merriman and Kyler Ng loaded the bases with nobody out. Colton Webber and Payton Rawlins both walked to force in runs, and Marty Mailes doubled to score a run. Another run would have scored, butWebber missed third base and was called out on an appeal.

Singles by Cade Cornett and Brett Roark drove in the final two runs.

Merriman went 4-for-4, scored two runs, and drove in one for Seneca (5-1), and Ng added two hits and one run scored.

Webber fanned six and walked four in the first five innings to pick up the victory, and Merriman gave up two runs in the last two frames.

Skylar Phillips tossed a four-hit shutout for Mount Vernon (5-1), striking out six batters and walking one.

Catcher Dominic Swillum with 3-for-4 and drove in four runs with two-run doubles in the first and fourth innings.

Logan Rycraft and Phillips contributed two hits apiece, and Phillips drove in one run.

Tripp Tucker stroked two of Lamar’s four hits.
