Joplin swimmers go 3-2 in duals to open season

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Joplin High School won three of five duals on Tuesday to open the Eagles’ girls swimming season.

The Eagles beat Summit Prep Academy 82-69, Parkview 86-62 and Lamar 88-65 and lost to Nevada 108-59 and Carthage 110-54.

“We have 15 girls on the team this year, and only five of them are returning swimmers,” Joplin coach Blair Dance said. “It was a great first experience for those 10 who have never participated in high school swimming.

“I was very proud of their efforts and look forward to seeing their continued improvement throughout the season.”

The Eagles’ Kate Stauffer won the 200 individual medley and placed second in the 100 breaststroke. Joplin also had third-place finishes by Kathleen Hughes in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly and the 200 freestyle relay team of Stauffer, Jaed’en Humphrey, Victoria Alford and Hughes.

Carthage’s Mercy Housh won the 100 butterfly, and she teamed with Taylor Hart, Shelby Hatcher and Lacey Stephens to win both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

Nevada’s Grace Reichard was a double winner in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. The Tigers’ Ashton Eador, Abbie Landoll, Mikayla Morhmon and Reichard also won the 200 freestyle relay.

Joplin’s next meet is Jan. 7, 2014, at the Carthage Pentathlon.
