Seneca girls down Joplin 62-45

SENECA, Mo. — Molli Cooper scored 22 points as Seneca pulled away in the fourth quarter and defeated Joplin 62-45 Thursday night in a nonconference girls basketball game.

Seneca (2-1) led 26-24 at halftime and 38-30 going into the fourth quarter.

The Eagles (1-5) scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to pull within three, but Seneca responded with an 8-0 run for a 46-35 advantage.

Cooper and Mirana Heath, who scored 15 points, each sank two 3-pointers for Seneca.

Katie Sticklin led Joplin with 14 points, including two 3-pointers, and Kelsey Johnson scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Bailey Taylor added eight points for the Eagles.

Joplin will play at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Springfield Central. Seneca will play at 5 p.m. today at McDonald County.

Pierce City boys 57, McAuley 45

PIERCE CITY, Mo. — Zack Hyde keyed a rally in the fourth quarter as the Eagles rallied past the Warriors in the nonconference contest.

Hyde, a 6-1 senior, scored 12 of his 25 points in the final period. Pierce City (4-3) outscored McAuley 22-8 to prevail.

Said Pierce City coach Matt Street: “We beat a good team. They were especially physical on the defensive end.

“We kept attacking,” Street said. “Shots finally started falling and we executed our offense.”

The Eagles, who entertain Southwest tonight, received 12 points from Colin Garner and 10 from Kole Kelley.

Cole Lowry netted 17 to lead McAuley scorers. Adam Robertson added 15. McAuley, thanks to a 16-9 advantage in the third period, led 37-35 entering the final quarter.

Republic girls 76, Carl Junction 48

REPUBLIC, Mo. — Brooke Stanfield and Jade Sawyer combined for 31 points to lead the Tigers to the nonconference victory.

Lindsey Showalter led Carl Junction (2-4) with 13 points, and Katie Skaggs contributed 10. The game was 14-14 after one quarter, but Republic opened leads of 35-28 at halftime and 58-34 after three quarters.

Stanfield scored 16 points for Republic, followed by Sawyer with 15 and Jordan Kabetske with 10.

Carl Junction plays tonight at St. Mary’s-Colgan, with the varsity game starting at 6.
