McDonald County boys defeat Webb City

NEOSHO, Mo. — McDonald County led nearly the entire game and defeated Webb City 61-47 in the first round of the Neosho Holiday Classic on Thursday at Neosho Middle School.

Daton Aubrey, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, scored 16 of his 26 points in the second half as the Mustangs pulled away after leading 27-20 at halftime.

“We have a young team and competing for 32 minutes and finishing games is something we’re learning,” said McDonald County head coach Trent Barratt. “Our defensive effort was pretty good from start to finish.

“With a young team, when somebody makes shots, we’re better on the defensive end,” he said. “I was proud we were able to hang onto the lead and finish it.”

The Mustangs’ Austin Grotts scored nine points and Jake Wood added eight points. Preston Ellis led Webb City with 11 points, including three 3-pointers.

The Cardinals tied the score at 6 on a three-point play by Zach Hallacy, who scored nine points, and took a 9-6 lead on a three-point play by Channing Mickey. McDonald County tied the score on Wood’s 3-pointer and led the rest of the way.

Webb City trailed 44-33 going into the fourth quarter but pulled to within 46-39 on Tanner Yokley’s first of two three-pointers with 5:46 remaining. The Mustangs responded by outscoring Webb City 7-3 over the next three minutes.

“Their kids at times had more want to than we did,” said Webb City coach Landon Cornish. “Our toughness and our focus were just not what we needed it to be.”

McDonald County will face Carthage in the Black Division semifinals at 1:30 p.m. today.

Carthage overcame a 27-point performance by East Newton’s Bryce Zimmerman and held the Patriots to three points in the second quarter.

Cory Prevost led Carthage with 15 points and teammate Anthony Turk scored 14 points. Carthage led 24-17 at halftime.
