It’s easy to think of Seneca High School product Jimmy Hudson as a football coach.
Hudson, after all, started two years as a free safety at William Jewell. He worked for three years in football at Joplin South Middle School and was an assistant in wrestling at Joplin High School. Plus, he played football several seasons with the non-pro Joplin Crusaders.
But his promotion to head boys basketball coach at Wyandotte High School after assisting one year, shouldn’t be a surprise.
“I actually started four years in basketball (at Seneca),” Hudson, preparing for a trip to Galena to help football coach Scott Martin in 7-on-7 competition, said with a laugh on Tuesday.
“If you can coach, you can coach any sport,” Hudson said. “You have to relate to the kids and you have to study.”
Hudson, in his first campaign with the Bears, assisted Martin and Scott Renken in basketball. Renken remained in the Lucky ‘7’ Conference by accepting the position of head boys basketball coach at Bluejacket.
“I really liked my experience as a wrestling coach,” Hudson said. “Coach (Shawn) Finch was phenomenal (at Joplin). You listen to him (Finch). You listen to Coach Martin.”
Hudson, who works with the defensive backs and wide receivers under Martin, graduated from Seneca in 1995. He was a three-year starter in baseball and football for the Indians.
Hudson, 35, transferred to Missouri Southern and eventually secured his degree from the Joplin school after the two years at William Jewell.
Hudson, whose assistant in basketball will be David Sherwood, expects seniors Jason Larson (a guard) and Mason Neece (a 6-foot-2, 210-pound forward) to pace the Bears in 2012-13.
“Larson and Neece, who scored in double figures, are good players,” Hudson said.
Cristi and Jimmy Hudson have three children — Gunner, 14; Ragan (soon 12) and Layne, 9. Cristi — formerly Skaggs — and Jimmy were classmates at Seneca.
