Wengert leaves coaching post for administration in Neosho

Jonathan Wengert, softball coach at Carl Junction High School, has been named an assistant principal at Neosho High School.

“Administration has been a goal,” Wengert said Thursday. “I’m probably out of coaching.”

Wengert, 33, was headed for a fifth season with the softball Bulldogs. He’s finishing a master’s degree in administration from William Woods University of Fulton, Mo.

Wengert, who received his undergraduate degree from Missouri Southern State University, recently stepped down after four seasons as the girls basketball coach at Carl Junction.

“I’m sure I’ll miss the camaraderie among the coaches and bonding with the students,” Wengert said.

But Wengert indicated those things can be renewed at Neosho.

Wengert actually coached a year at Neosho High School before moving to Carl Junction.

Darren Cook is the principal at Neosho and Richard Fretwell is the other assistant principal.

Mike Strickland, Wengert’s predecessor, accepted a position in the Galena (Kan.) system.

Carl Junction athletic director Jesse Wall said that applications for the position will be accepted through next week.

Wall can be reached at (417) 621-8445.

Wengert, who was assisted by Casey Swartz last season in softball, guided the Bulldogs to two Class 3 district titles in four years. The other two teams lost in a district final.

Those championship teams lost to Republic and eventual state titlist champion Nevada in the first round of the playoffs. The last three Carl Junction teams won Big 8 Conference crowns.
