BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. —
Joplin, notching its 20th win, outlasted Osawatomie 12-11 in the Baxter Springs American Legion baseball tournament on Friday.
The Miners, 20-10, face Baxter Springs Triple AAA at 5 p.m. today at the Field of Dreams.
“It was ugly. But we’ll take it,” Joplin coach Bobby Stackhouse said. “Coach Harryman (Joplin High School’s Kirk Harryman) always has said any wins are good and any losses are bad. It’s good to reach 20 wins.
“I’m glad we had the last at-bat,” Stackhouse said., “We never trailed once we took the lead (with six runs in the second inning and four in the third). They tied it in the sixth inning but we never gave up the lead and I believe that was a key.”
The Miners won the game by scoring a run in the last of the seventh inning to snap an 11-11 tie.
Winning pitcher Bryce Ash singled with two outs and wound up scoring on an infield error after walks to Gavin Jones and Brett Graham loaded the bases.
Graham finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and Hank Millard and Keith Simpson each had two hits and two RBI. Nate Brummer added two hits and Josh Miller rapped his first home run of the season (a solo blow in the fourth inning).
The right-handed Ash worked four innings in relief. He allowed just one earned run, two hits and struck out four.
Matt Ferguson and Drew Needham had two hits apiece for Osawatomie.
Stackhouse said that the right-handed Simpson, originally scheduled to pitch on Friday, is today’s probable starting hurler for the Miners. Brummer opened on the mound on Friday because he couldn’t make today’s contest.
