MARS Series race set for Monett Speedway

Points leader Jesse Stovall and six-time champion Terry Phillips are expected to head the field for tonight’s 7:30 MARS DIRTcar Series special at the Monett Speedway.

The winner of the MARS main event on the 3/8-mile clay track will receive $3,000.

Support classes are USRA B modified, factory stock, pure stock and pro-4.

Stovall, Galena, Mo., and Tony Jackson Jr., Lebanon, are 1-2 in MARS points with 765 and 720, respectively, after Saturday night’s show at the Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa. Brandon Morton, Broken Arrow, Okla., is third with 559.

Stovall, driving a race car belonging to David Turner, Creighton, Mo., won the Liberty 50 — sanctioned by the Lucas Oil MLRA and the Corn Belt Clash as well as MARS — at Corning.

Phillips, runner-up to Stovall in the A feature, entered the event with three straight MLRA victories.

Phillips ironically won the fourth heat by beating Stovall. Other heat winners, all from Iowa, were Denny Eckrich (Tiffin), Jason O’Brien (Atlantic) and Mike Collins (Council Bluffs).

Trailing Phillips in the main event were Chad Simpson (Mount Vernon, Iowa), John Anderson (Omaha), Jackson, Chris Spieker (Massena, Iowa), Kyle Berck (Marquette, Neb.), Eckrich and Charlie McKenna (Clear Lake, Iowa).

The winner of tonight’s B modified A feature will earn $400.

Points leaders through June 18 in the support classes: J.C. Morton (USRA B modified), Joplin’s John Coats (factory stock), Rick McNally (pure stock) and Russell Niehoff (pro-4).

Pit gates open at 3 p.m. and the grandstand at 5. Hot laps are set for 7. Admission prices are $20 and $5 (ages 12-15). A pit pass is $35.

Trevor Drake repeats

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Drake, earning $500, won the Midwest Modz 20-lap A feature Saturday night at Springfield Raceway.

The second Rob Burgess Memorial, presented by Garfield’s Restaurant & Pub, emphasized the Casey’s General Stores Midwest Modz at the quarter-mile dirt track.

The repeating Drake, Webb City, wound up beating Rusty Forrest of Ozark, Taylor Moore of Bois D’Arc, Matthew Thulin of Miami and Todd McGregor of Clever.

Joplin’s Bobby Gough, who finished eighth, and Drake started on the front row.

Carthage’s Jackie Dalton and Joplin’s John Yeoman finished 1-2 in the USRA modified main event. Granby’s Jon Yeoman Jr. and Webb City’s Scott Drake were 1-2 in the USRA B modified.

Rounding out the top six in the modified A feature were Mitch Keeter of Webb City, Jerry Lankton of Lampe, Danny DeMasters II of Neosho and Terry Beckham II of Webb City.

Completing the main event winners were Wayne Johnston, Rolla, Legends Cars; Jack Hamer, Ava, pure stock; Rex Sawyer, Ava, street stock, and Joplin’s Grayson Cox, Legends Young Lions.

Justin Comer and Park Jones, both of Joplin, followed Johnston across the finish line.
