Carl Junction faces Harrisonville at 9 a.m. on Saturday as a MSHSAA Class 1 Team Sectional will be held at the Joplin Athletic Complex.
Carl Junction is host of the four-team event.
The other semifinal is Rogersville vs. Springfield Greenwood. Winners will clash at 1 p.m. with the survivor advancing to Springfield and the Cooper Complex next Thursday.
Raindate is Monday, according to Carl Junction coach Lisa O’Hanahan.
Records, according to MSHSAA, are 12-3 for Carl Junction, 9-2 for Harrisonville, 12-3 for Greenwood and 14-0 for Rogersville.
“We don’t know a whole lot about Harrisonville,” O’Hanahan said Thursday. “We watched some of their players during the individual sectional at Warrensburg (earlier in the week).
“We’ve heard they are a tough team,” O’Hanahan said. “I believe we’ll be ready for the challenge. But we’ll have to be ‘on’ our game.”
The Carl Junction singles lineup consists of senior Emily Cook, senior Rebecca O’Hanahan, sophomore Kenzie Kuykendall, junior Madison Adrian, junior Cheyenne Pickett and sophomore Kaylie Hawkins.
Cook-O’Hanahan will be No. 1 in doubles. Kuykendall-Adrian and Pickett-Hawkins will be No. 2 and 3, respectively.
Carl Junction beat fellow Big 8 Conference member Mount Vernon 5-1 to win District 11.
Taylor Clements triumphs
Lamar’s Clements, in the completion of a suspended individual sectional match, defeated Thomas Jefferson’s Ophelia Chen 7-6 (9-7), 6-0 on Wednesday at the Millennium Tennis and Fitness Club.
Chen led 6-5 in the first set when rain forced suspension on Tuesday at Warrensburg.
Chen (13-4), a senior, was seeking a second straight trip to the Class 1 state tournament.
“She had an outstanding career,” Thomas Jefferson coach Tom Brumfield said. “For my three years, she was No. 2 in singles for two years and No. 1 this season.”
More Thomas Jefferson
It was all Cavaliers in the third-place match in singles in District 11.
Sophomore Heather Smith and freshman Lia Wu clipped juniors Thisbe Scholfield-Johnson and Evadna Rodriguez 8-6 on Monday at Thomas Jefferson.
The match was postponed last Friday.
