Five athletes from Missouri high schools are among the latest track and field and cross country signees for Missouri Southern State University.
Lions coach Patty Vavra announced the additions on Tuesday.
Two of the recruits from southwest Missouri previously were announced in the Globe. They are Tesa Otero of Joplin College Heights Christian and Kylie Brown.
Otero, the daughter of Harold and Mary Clapp, is a candidate for the shot put and discus. Brown, the daughter of Devin Brown and Michelle Coonce, was a distance ace for the Bulldogs.
Aurora’s Emily Weldin, West Plains’ Lauren Robson and Moberly’s Shelby Sutherland complete the Missouri recruits.
Ashleigh McFarland, from Rio Vista (Texas) High School, and Lauren Sanders, from Owasso (Okla.), round out the scholar/athletes.
Weldin, coached by Kris Besch, was a sprinter at Aurora after qualifying for the state in cross country as a freshman.
Weldin, the daughter of Anita Weldin and unsure of a major, was a state qualifier in the 4x800 and 4x400 in 2008 and 2009. She qualified in the 100, 200, 400 and 4 x 400 in 2010.
Robson was a four-year performer in both track and cross country for Joe Dixon at West Plains, She helped the Zizzers claim cross country titles in 2007 and 2008 and place runner-up the past two seasons.
Robson, the daughter of Chuck and Marcia Robson, plans to major in health promotion and wellness at Southern.
Sutherland was a four-year jumper for Scott Knox and helped the Spartans annex conference and district titles. The daughter of Charles and Teresa Sutherland is undecided on a major.
McFarland, who earned four letters, was a state qualifier in the pole vault and a regional qualifier in the 400.
McFarland, who performed in track and field for Bobby Bell and Brandi Purvis, is the daughter of Billy and Chanda McFarland and plans to major in kinesiology.
The Rams’ Sanders lettered four years for Steve Parker and was all-region in the 1,600 in 2008 and placed ninth in the event at state. In 2009, she helped the 4x800 place fifth and was ninth in the 400.
Sanders was part of the third-place team in the 4x800 in the young women’s division at the USA Track and Field Championships last season.
Lauren, the daughter of Kelly and Janice Sanders, plans to major in chemistry (pre-pharmacy) at MSSU,
