Upsets were the order of the day Wednesday during the completion of the first round of the USTA Freeman $10,000 Men’s Futures at Millennium Tennis and Fitness Center.
The tone was set in the first match of the day when Dane Webb, a wild card entry, knocked off No. 5 seed Gonzalo Lama, 6-4, 6-3.
More upsets followed. No. 2 seed Daniel Yoo was defeated by Zhizhen Zhang, 6-2, 6-2. Zhang entered the main draw through the qualifying round last week.
Kyle McMorrow dispatched No. 7 seed Alex Blumenberg 7-6 (5), 6-4, but Blumenberg remained in the tournament on the doubles side with partner Sebastien Boltz by defeating Alexios Halebian and Mac Styslinger 6-3, 7-6 (4).
McMorrow also advanced in doubles when he and Eric Quigley upset third-seeded Gonzalo Lama and Jorge Montero, 6-4, 7-6 (1).
The top-seeded doubles team, Harrison Adams and Shane Vinsant, survived a marathon by defeating Dekel Bar and Andrew Ochotta, 3-6, 7-6 (3) (10-6).
Play continues today with the second round of singles and the doubles semifinals.
