Fields named East Newton boys basketball coach

Kyle Fields, an assistant the past four years at McDonald County High School, has been named boys basketball coach at Granby East Newton for 2012-13.

Fields, also a 2004 graduate of McDonald County, said on Thursday that settling on his career was a battle between education/coaching and business for several years before education won.

He attended Crowder College two years and earned his degree from Missouri Southern. But he attended other schools before seeing the freshman job opening at McDonald County, securing the position and concentrating on education.

Fields was on Trent Barratt’s Mustang staff in 2011-12. He previously worked under Mike Austin for two years and Ryan Stokes for one.

The position at East Newton, a member of the Big 8 Conference, became open when Barry Yocom left for Reeds Spring — his alma mater — after three seasons with the Patriots.

“I’m excited,” Fields said. “I enjoyed, as an athlete, playing against East Newton. Now, I’m joining a program that has people with whom I’m very familiar. A lot of our teaching (the game of basketball) comes from Jack Shaver at McDonald County.”

Shaver, of course, is a retired longtime coach of the Mustangs.

Fields also was referring to Jamey Gilion and Todd Dana. Gilion, who remains as the East Newton boys assistant, prepped at McDonald County. Coaching experience for Dana, the Patriots’ athletic director, includes time at McDonald County.

Fields also will work with junior high football and teach health and physical education at East Newton.

Fields quickly held a team camp for seventh-graders through seniors after taking the reins.

“We had a better turnout than I expected,” Fields said. “We have good numbers in the freshman and sophomore classes. But we could have only three upperclassmen.”
