MARION, Kan. —
The Riverton Rams sent three competitors to the Kansas Class 3A state powerlifting championships and all three placed in their respective weight divisions.
Freshman Dayton Mooney earned a state title in his 140-pound weight class with 745 pounds combined from the bench press, squat and power clean. Mooney’s squat of 355 pounds broke the state record by 15 pounds. His other lifts were 200 pounds on the bench press and 190 pounds on power clean.
Junior T.J. McDonald took third in the 220-pound weight class, lifting a total of 1,065 pounds. He also set a new squat record for his weight class at 520 pounds, breaking the old record by 50 pounds. He recorded 305 pounds on the bench and 240 pounds with his power clean.
Senior Sam Taylor finished fourth in the 220-pound division with 1,025 pounds. He was second in the bench press with 355 pounds. He also registered a squat of 415 and a power clean of 255.
“I’m very proud of these boys,” Riverton coach Darren Mooney said. “They all had set goals months ago in preparing for this meet. They all believed they would place and would set new weightlifting records. I give these boys all the credit. They worked hard and earned every honor and award they received this year.”
The meet consisted of 36 schools and more than 390 competitors.
