Jesse Stovall, extending his points lead, won the MARS DIRTcar Series main event on Friday night on the 3/8-mile Great American Dirt Track.
Stovall, Galena, Mo., beat six-time MARS points champion Terry Phillips of Springfield on Night 1 of the Showdown. Stovall’s eighth career win denied Phillips’ 79th. Stovall earned $1,500.
Trailing Phillips were Clay Daly (Watsonville, Calif.), Morgan Bagley (Tyler, Texas) and Eric Turner (Hermitage, Mo.).
Stovall led Tony Jackson Jr. of Lebanon 914-869 entering Saturday night’s late model show ($12,000 to win, $1,200 to start) at the Great American Dirt Track.
Jackson placed eighth in the A feature on Friday night. Joplin’s Steve Johnson was 16th among 27 cars.
Winners in the heat races were Justin Asplin of Birch Tree (Mo.), Bagley, Daly and Phillips. Stovall was second in the third heat.
MARS tonight is at the Seward County Fairgrounds Speedway at Liberal, Kan. It’s the first appearance at Liberal for MARS. The winner of the A feature receives $3,000.
Pit gates open at 3 p.m. and the grandstand at 5 for the 6 p.m. program. Support classes are modified, stock and hobby.
