Lions to host Gorillas in Sonic Trophy Series matchup

Missouri Southern will face Pittsburg State in a Sonic Trophy Series matchup at 6 p.m. today at Joe Becker Stadium.

Pittsburg State (15-26) was swept by Missouri Western in a four-game series last weekend at St. Joseph, while Missouri Southern won one of four games against Northeastern State at Joe Becker Stadium.

When the two teams played on April 1 at Pittsburg, MSSU’s Skylar Hill shut out the Gorillas for 72⁄3 innings in a 3-0 victory. PSU third baseman Brad Foss had two of the Gorillas’ six hits.

Both games between the two teams are nonconference games. Foss, who has started all 41 games this season, leads the Gorillas in batting average (.361), hits (53), doubles (12) and total bases (68).

Left fielder Cody Ball (.320), first baseman Kyle Dickens (.307), right fielder Luke Bordewick (.307) and center fielder Andrew Kreiling (.305) are among the Gorillas’ offensive leaders.

Designated hitter Nathan Arnold is batting .355 in 21 games. As a pitcher, he is 3-2 in seven starts with a 5.35 ERA. Ryan McKay (2-3, 3.18 ERA) has five saves in 15 appearances.

MSSU (21-19) is batting .294 as a team. Center fielder Logan Moon leads the Lions in batting (.390), hits (57), triples (5), RBIs (33) and total bases (76).

Outfielder Beau Phillips (.314), catcher Mitchell Osburn (.308), second baseman Brandon Weller (.308, 17 doubles) and outfielder Axel Johnson (.297) are among the Lions’ offensive leaders.

Hill (3-1, 4.56 ERA) has started three games in seven appearances.
