Recent NCAA tourney stars to headline basketball camp

Wichita State's Baker, KU's Ellis among guest coaches

Two stars from the 2013 NCAA Tournament will serve as instructors for an advanced basketball skills camp this week at Thomas Jefferson Independent School.

Wichita State Shockers guard Ron Baker and Kansas Jayhawks forward Perry Ellis will join former NBA player Greg Dreiling, Missouri Southern forward Samantha Soyez, MBCA Hall of Fame coach Bill Carter and several others to help teach basketball fundamentals to middle school and high school students.

The camp will be from Monday through Friday at Thomas Jefferson. Each day, the girls’ camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon, and the boys’ camp will go from 1 to 4 p.m. Players can register online at, or they can enroll on the first day of the camp.

Baker averaged 11.0 points during the tournament as he helped the Shockers reach the Final Four. He scored 16 in an upset win over Gonzaga. The former Scott City (Kan.) High School star averaged 8.7 points for the season.

Ellis helped the Jayhawks reach the Sweet Sixteen as a freshman. He averaged 5.8 points for the season, but averaged 10.5 points over six Big 12 and NCAA tournament games. He was named to the Big 12 all-tournament team. In high school, Ellis led Wichita Heights (Kan.) to four consecutive state titles.

Dreiling, a 7-foot-1 center, starred with the Kansas Jayhawks before being selected by the Indiana Pacers in the 1986 NBA Draft. He played 10 seasons in the NBA for the Pacers, the Dallas Mavericks and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He is now an advanced scout with the Mavericks.

Carter earned more than 500 wins and two state championships in his career. He was a head coach at the high school level for more than 30 years and coached in college for 12 years.

The camp also will include former Missouri Southern players Erin Rice and Skyler Bowlin, Navarro College’s Johnny Estelle, Angelina College’s Todd Neighbors, Maize High School’s Chris Davis, College Heights Christian’s Eric Johnson and other local coaches.
