Baseball Lions to face Drury in Springfield today

Missouri Southern will take a break from its MIAA schedule when it faces Drury in a single nine-inning nonconference game at 5 p.m. today at Meador Park in Springfield.

MSSU (20-15 overall, 14-14 MIAA) won the last game of a four-game series 4-3 in 11 innings Sunday at Northwest Missouri State. Three of the four games went into extra innings.

The Lions were 1-3 in the series and slipped into ninth place in the tightly bunched MIAA standings. Southwest Baptist (15-12, 18-16) swept a four-game series at Pittsburg State and moved into sixth place, 11⁄2 games ahead of MSSU.

Drury (20-7, 14-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference) is on a 14-game winning streak and is 15-1 at home. The Panthers are batting .347 as a team and have held their opponents to a .238 average.

Center fielder Nick Thimesch has started all 27 games and leads Drury with a .476 average. Shortstop Caleb Cole is batting .387.

MSSU is batting .299 as a team, led by center fielder Logan Moon (.398) and right fielder Beau Phillips (.344). The Lions’ pitching staff has a 3.41 ERA and has allowed six home runs in 277 innings.

Missouri Southern will return to its MIAA schedule when it faces Northeastern State at 6 p.m. Friday in the first game of a four-game series at Joe Becker Stadium.
