Randy Robertson named boys basketball coach at McAuley

Randy Robertson met with his new basketball team Thursday for the first time after he was selected as head boys coach at McAuley Catholic.

Robertson comes to McAuley from Cassville, where he was head coach from 2006-09. He then taught in junior high for two years before he retired. He succeeds former basketball coach Chuck Williams.

He recalled coaching against McAuley early in his career. “When I was at Bronaugh, they were good,” he said. “In my second year, they beat us in the district final at Liberal. John Ihm was here. That’s going a way back.”

Robertson grew up in the Nevada area and is a graduate of Metz High School. He attended Crowder College and is a Missouri Southern alumnus.

Robertson said his coaching experience includes five years at Bronaugh, two years at Diamond, one year at King City and 17 years at Billings. He said his teams typically are defensive-minded.

“You have to have defense to win,” he said. “We’ll probably run motion-type things (on offense). It would be nice to run up and down the floor, but definitely the first thing will be defense.

“I won’t know for sure until I meet the kids and see what they can do. They’ll get to play if they can guard the other guy.”

Robertson also met with new McAuley athletic director Brenden Gubera, who returned to the school in March after he served as head football coach at Hermann the last three seasons. Gubera will be head football and golf coach at McAuley.
